The fresco painting ‚Silence‘ depicts the head of a child, as Luc Tuymans saw depicted in medical magazines. With the hand of a projection, a large scale copy of one of his paintings from 1991 (carrying the same title: Silence) is copied on the wall of a well known burger restaurant (The Burgerij). Luc Tuymans‘ work finds inspiration in emotionally charged subject matters, and here with the proximity of the Sint Elisabeth Hospital, the original loaded photograph this painting is based on, is even more present in the work. As advertised, the fresco remained at the Leopoldplaats for the duration of 1 year, yet ‚Silence‘ keeps on being revisited by Luc Tuymans. Normally Tuymans‘ work doesn’t take place outdoors. ‚Silence‘ found its way to the public space as part of the initiative ’11 artist against the wall‘ (by Born In Antwerp).
